選挙について

再び。

結局「移民は選挙権がない」と判明しましたが、面白いことに、ちょうどそんなことをクラスの皆さんとも話していた週に、新聞にこんな記事が。

タイトルは「移民も選挙権を持つべきだ」

移民も税金を払ってるし、子供たちをカナダ人と同じように学校に通わせてる。義務だけ背負わせて権利を取り上げるのはどうか、という説なのですが。

カナダも、むかーし昔は、家を所有している男性だけ選挙権があった時代があり、その後、ユダヤ人や特定の宗教の人は選挙できない時を経て、日本人、中国人、その他アジア系がやっと選挙権を手にしたのは１９４８年、女性が投票できるようになったのは、ほんの１００年前、という変遷を経て来ています。

バンクーバー市の人口約二百万人中移民は六万人。結構な割合の人が投票できない計算になります。

なかなかデリケートなこの件については、すぐに解決することはないでしょう。

で、それはそれで置いておいて、

「バンクーバーの鳥」を決めるオンライン投票！

来年の夏バンクーバーで催される鳥類学学会及び国際鳥フェスティバルに先立って、バンクーバーの公式の鳥を決める選挙（笑）が。

候補の中には、うちにもよく来るキツツキの一種「フリッカー」や、私の大好きな「ハミングバード」も。

「可愛くも珍しくもないけど、カモメがいい！水に囲まれたバンクーバーの象徴じゃないか！」などという投書もありましたが、最終候補はこの４種類。

これは私も投票できるから、やっぱりハミングバードに一票か？？

    And I can hear " If you really want to vote, why don't you guys become Canadiens? " In my case, I have to give up my Japanese nationality to become a Canadian, and that is really a hard thing to even think about. In the mean time, as you suggested, I'll cheer for hummingbirds. ほんとうですね。かわいいハミングバードのほうが、バカなせいじかよりたいせつです。

    That's true, if you pay taxes where you live why shouldn't you be allowed to vote? I think it's a protectionist measure: communities are in general afraid of outsiders, afraid that they will take over and change things. It takes open mindedness to include and welcome everybody regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity and culture. But giving newcomers the right to vote would certainly make them feel included and more likely to get involved in their new community. Well, I am sure it's easier and more fun for you to pick a favourite bird than one of those politicians... your hummingbirds make you happier than any of the potiticians would.
